1985 witnessed the inauguration of Rajiv Gandhi University Itanagar, formerly known as Arunachal University in Rono Hills. RGU was converted as a Central University in 2007. Currently there are 7 degree colleges affiliated with RGU. At present, Prof. Tamo Mibang is the Vice Chancellor of RGU.

RGU Itanagar offers Graduation and Post-Graduation courses in various fields. Some of them are Basic Sciences, Commerce & Management, Education, Engineering & Technology, Environmental Sciences, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Languages and Social Sciences. Apart from the basic courses. RGU aims at overall development of students by providing facilities like Library which homes many books for students, Auditorium for Cultural festivities, Botanical Gardens, Health care & Sports.
